Current Semester PD Seminars



Each semester, the Professional Development Program of the Graduate School puts together Professional Development Seminars to aid graduate students, specifically teaching associates and teaching assistants, in developing the skills necessary to make them successful in their career pursuits.

Listed below are our Spring 08 offerings with their dates and times. Space is limited, so sign up early. If you have any questions please e-mail ngupta@syr.edu.

Workshops Offered
  • Portfolio Construction Workshop

    This interactive workshop is designed for all graduate students with an interest in constructing, improving, or beginning to gather materials for a Teaching Portfolio. These portfolios are used in the application process for several awards and programs at Syracuse University, including Teaching Fellow, Outstanding TA, and the Certificate in University Teaching, and are sometimes required or supplemental aspects of applications for instructors. We will discuss how to create, organize, and present aspects of the portfolio including the teaching philosophy, instructional evaluations, and teaching materials. Distinguished Teaching Fellows will be on hand to guide you through the organization, content and design of your professional portfolio.

  • The Digital You: Electronic Portfolio Workshop

    The Graduate School is pleased to present this informational and interactive session about the creation of the electronic portfolio using our e-portfolio platform. This session will meet in the computer lab where experts, Aggie Kwiatkowska and Yin Kreher, will guide you through the process of creating your professional electronic portfolio for submission. Please bring electronic copies of your professional portfolio documents to this seminar to maximize your experience.

  • Popular Culture, Pedagogy, and Authority

    Pop culture is all around us. This presentation provides some insights into how you can negotiate popular culture as a pedagogical tool. Some knowledge of pop culture can help us understand the ways that pop culture operates for our students and consider ways that you can use popular culture to enhance student learning.

  • "Dissertation" Is Not a Four-Letter-Word: Managing the Doctoral Life

    The prospect of writing a dissertation can be overwhelming. Can you get through the process successfully - and maintain your sanity too? Nisha Gupta, PhD in Cultural Foundations of Education, will lead this interactive workshop in which we will discuss ways of navigating the dissertation process and timeline as well as methods for completion. Come prepared to participate!

  • Getting Ready for the Academic Job Market

    Its never too early to start preparing for the job search. In this session panel members will share their experiences from both sides of the Academic Job Search. From serving on search committees to reading job ads, entering the job market is above all a process. This session will provide participants with a wealth of knowledge that will help to organize and prepare you to enter the job market successfully.

  • Engaging Students

    Twenty years of research shows that slightly more interactive techniques can make a class far more effective. Students of teachers who taught with interactive approaches made twice the average gain in learning–more by two standard deviations (Hake 1998). Speaker Tara Gray invites you come experiment with these ideas and then try some of them in your classes.

  • Publish and Flourish

    Many scholars are educated as writers at the School of Hard Knocks, but it’s not the only school, or even the best. Much is known about how to become more prolific–and any scholar can. Even when you can’t work harder, there are important ways to work smarter. Tara Gray, author of “Publish and Flourish” will present.
