Benefits of Classroom Assessment Techniques by ITAs
Many institutions offer courses to those ITAs not cleared to teach and these can vary from basic ESL courses to comprehensive pedagogical courses. Though these courses differ widely in their curriculum, the ITAs are essentially learning how to become effective teachers. The use of classroom assessment techniques (CATs) provides a tool, to shift the focus away from improving teaching to improving student learning. Since the feedback is immediate, both the ITA and the students are able to make the changes to improve the effectiveness of the course. These strategies help to communicate the ITA's interest in the students' learning process and enhance learning of the subject matter by the students.
Syracuse University in collaboration with Vanderbilt University, University of Florida and University of Missouri have begun a pilot project to determine the methodology for a more comprehensive study using case studies of ITAs from various disciplines at the four institutions. The four institutions will present their case studies examining ITAs' reflective use of CATs and various measures of classroom dynamics and teaching effectiveness at the TESOL conference in March 2003.
