Career Aspiration Survey
After receiving a Preparing Future Faculty grant in 1997, a new research initiative was undertaken in an ambitious effort to enhance existing professional development programs. The "Career Aspirations Survey" was conceived as a longitudinal research instrument which would provide both the insight to improve the operation of various programs, and the knowledge to identify institutional trends.
The survey consists of three distinct phases. In Phase 1, a set of questions is administered to graduate students entering the Teaching Assistant Orientation Program. In Phase 2, similarly-framed questions are administered to teaching associates entering the Future Professoriate Project. In the final, Phase 3, an exit survey is administered, to degree (mainly doctoral) recipients who have completed their participation in the Future Professoriate Project.
At each phase, we are able to gain a rich perspective on such things as backgrounds, expectations, motivations, needs, goals, short- and long-term plans, and academic and professional experiences. Through careful analysis of all the Professional Development Programs, we are hopeful that the "Career Aspirations Survey" will provide information to assist us to better serve our graduate students, both now and in the future.
