English Language Proficiency Services (ELP)
Syracuse University is proud that it counts some 1400 international students from 130 countries among its graduate community. Increasingly, the University must search for new ways to prepare undergraduates to think globally, and assuredly one of the best ways is to provide opportunities for our students to study and interact with faculty members and teaching assistants from other cultures. Having international students as tutors, course and laboratory instructors, and recitation and review session leaders adds immeasurably to undergraduate education. Since Syracuse University is determined to provide the highest quality of education for its students, the TA Program of the Graduate School offers an assessment of American English language skills for new teaching assistants. When necessary courses are offered to prepare the TAs to be successful as both students and instructors.
Those TAs assessed a rating not cleared for instruction are asked to take one of two ESOL course supported by the Graduate School. These are ENG 610: Oral Communication in Teaching and ENG 640: English Conversation for International Teaching Assistants. For further information on the rating scale and courses offered please consult the English Language Proficiency Policies and Services Handbook.
